Picture a Grade 11 Afrikaans lesson that opens with a question instead of notes: how would you pitch your pop-up shop to an Afrikaans-speaking customer? Learners argue it out in groups at the whiteboard, write, rewrite and present on their iPads, and you guide them with sharp questions rather than answers. If that sounds like the classroom you have been wanting to work in, Verve College would like to meet you.
The role
This is a permanent position teaching Afrikaans First Additional Language to our FET learners in Grade 10-12, following CAPS and SACAI. You will cover the full curriculum, including literature, language structures, comprehension and writing, through problem-led, collaborative lessons connected to real life and to our Art, Business and Design focus areas. You will also mentor a group of learners. The role starts on 1 January 2027.
What you will do
- Open lessons with a question, a text or a real problem, then let learners work through it in groups at vertical surfaces before you step in.
- Cover the full Grade 10-12 Afrikaans FAL CAPS and SACAI content through discussion, creative writing, debate and projects rather than lectures and worksheets.
- Connect Afrikaans to real life and to Art, Business and Design: marketing copy for a pop-up shop, a design brief, an interview with someone in the community.
- Use iPads for learners to create, research, record and present their work, never to copy notes.
- Build time into lessons for learners to reflect on what they learnt and how they learnt it.
- Mentor a group of learners: know each one by name, greet them at the door and keep parents in the loop with good news as well as concerns.
- Join Monday afternoon team talks prepared, share your resources and meet deadlines for planning, marks and reports.
Who you are
- You are comfortable with a bit of productive struggle in the room and resist the urge to give the answer too quickly.
- You correct calmly and privately, never shout or shame, and you make a point of repairing the relationship afterwards.
- You apply the school rules and Code of Conduct the same way every time, because consistency is part of caring.
- You raise concerns face to face with the right person, not in the corridor or a group chat, and you back the team's decision once it is made.
- You try new methods, tools and systems with an open mind, give honest feedback on what works, then help fix what does not.
- You own your mistakes, apologise when you get it wrong and keep learning.
- You put learners and parents first, and you judge success by more than marks alone.
Requirements
- SACE registration, or eligibility to register
- A recognised teaching qualification (B.Ed or PGCE)
- A clear criminal record and Sexual Offences Register check
- A degree or major in Afrikaans
- Confident using iPads and Apple tools
- Comfortable with digital platforms and Google Workspace
- Fluent in English and Afrikaans
- Available for team meetings on Monday afternoons
Why Verve
Verve is a young, growing independent school in Rustenburg, Grade R to 12, where teachers are facilitators and every learner works on an iPad. Things here change and improve quickly, and facilitators have a real hand in shaping how we teach. You will work in a team that talks openly, tries new ideas together and treats every learner as someone to know, not just someone to teach.
Applications close on 30 October 2026. Applying takes about 5 minutes online: upload your CV, answer a few questions and record a 30-90 second introduction video. Only online applications will be accepted.
